Retorts

The piece of glassware that was just about always shown in drawings of ancient Alchemists laboratories, Retorts are still a quick & easy way to distill liquids. The liquid to be distilled is placed in the vessel and heated. The neck acts as a condenser, allowing the evaporated vapors to condense and flow along the neck to a collection vessel placed underneath. Not quite as efficient as using water cooling and a standard laboratory condenser, but a lot more convenient.
Retorts are available in 500 ml and 1L , both have ground glass stoppers making them suitable for use with highly corrosive materials or liquids that would attack rubber stoppers.
Like all our glassware, they're made from high quality heat resistant Borosilicate glass.

500 ml Retort: $38.00

 1000 ml Retort: $49.00

Vacuum Filtering Flask

Our Vacuum Filtering Flask is basically a 500 ml Erlenmeyer Flask with a vacuum port on one side.
The port accepts hose with a 3/8" inside diameter.
Normally used for vacuum filtration (see our Vacuum Filtration kit below), but can also be used for a wide variety of other specialized applications. Made from high quality heat resistant Borosilicate glass.
The Vacuum Filtering Flask has a much heavier wall and rim than a standard Erlenmeyer flask making it extremely strong & durable. Uses a #7 Rubber Stopper.
Note: We also offer a Vacuum Filtering Flask complete with a vacuum pump, funnel & hose.
See our Laboratory Equipment page.

500 ml Vacuum Filtering Flask: $15.00

Graduated Cylinders

Graduated measuring cylinders made from heavy Borosilicate glass. Sturdy, strong plastic base with bumper guard to prevent breakage in the event they are knocked over. 3 sizes available: 10 ml capacity with white enamel graduations every 0.2 ml,
50 ml capacity with graduations every 1 ml, or 100 ml capacity also with graduations every 1 ml.

10 ml Graduated Cylinder: $4.50

50 ml Graduated Cylinder: $6.50

100 ml Graduated Cylinder: $8.50

Condensers

 Here's a great deal on a condenser.
Condensers find wide usage in the laboratory for distillation, reflux operations, extraction, etc.
Highly efficient, and perfect for distilling water, making or concentrating acids, extracting oils or perfumes from plants, etc. Sealed inner tube, large capacity water jacket provides efficient cooling.
Far more resistant to breakage than fragile coil-type condensers.
Top quality heat resistant Borosilicate (Pyrex type) glass construction.
Large end fits a standard #4 rubber stopper, and the upper & lower cooling water inlets fit standard 1/4" ID plastic or latex tubing. Overall length is 18" (460mm), cooling section is 12" (300mm), and the jacket diameter is 1-1/8" (30mm). Sells for well over $100 in most laboratory supply catalogs.
Large end uses a size # 4 Rubber Stopper, or size # 10 Cork Stopper.

Close-ups of Condenser ends.

Liebig Condenser: $40.00

Electrolysis - Hoffman Apparatus

One of the most elegant pieces of laboratory equipment, the Hoffman Apparatus, used to produce Hydrogen & Oxygen gas from water... or other gases from other liquids. This is a top quality piece of laboratory equipment, not 'student grade' or similar designations. Our Hoffman Apparatus comes complete with two sets of electrodes, one Carbon and the other Platinum. The Platinum set of electrodes are used for the electrolysis of water and the Carbon electrodes are used for the electrolysis of Ammonia or Hydrochloric Acid. The glass unit has two connected limbs graduated to 60 ml capacity, integral with reservoir tube and funnel shaped bulb, with a stopcock at the top of each limb. The lower part of the limbs accept the electrodes. The overall length of the unit (apparatus only, without the stand) is about 2 feet. To produce Hydrogen & Oxygen gas, simply fill the unit with water (with a little Citric Acid or Potassium Hydroxide added to make the water more conductive) and apply a DC voltage to the two electrodes (a 12 volt battery works fine if no DC power supplies are available). When power is applied, Hydrogen gas will begin to bubble off of one electrode and Oxygen gas the other.
Perfect for demonstrations on the production of Hydrogen. Fill balloons with Hydrogen gas or use the gasses produced for other experiments.
The unit is available alone (as shown below),
or complete with the stand and two clamps as shown to the left.

Packaged in a solid block of Styrofoam for damage-free delivery.

Hoffman Apparatus, complete (with stand & clamps): $120.00

Hoffman Apparatus only (no stand or clamps): $95.00

Student Electrolysis Apparatus

A simple and very affordable Electrolysis Apparatus - ideal for student use.
Clearly demonstrates how Hydrogen & Oxygen gas are produced by passing DC current through water.
Use a 12 volt DC power supply, 12 volt battery or 12 volt solar panel - in fact any source of 12 VDC will work.
Consists of a plastic container 3" diameter x 3.75" tall with mounted Carbon electrodes.
The bottom of the container has cut outs so that leads can be connected to the electrodes with ease. Supplied with two alligator clip leads ( 1 red, 1 black), 2 graduated test tubes and instruction manual.
When filled with water & powered, the unit will break down water into Hydrogen & Oxygen gases, each one collecting in its respective test tube. When full, the Hydrogen test tube can be carefully lifted out, quickly inverted and lit with a flame. This produces a small explosion (a 'pop') proving the presence of a flammable gas. For proper operation, the unit requires the addition of a small amount of Potassium Hydroxide or
Sodium Chloride to make the water more conductive and to speed Hydrogen gas production.

Student Electrolysis Apparatus: $25.00
