Radiation Shielding & Protection

Lead Blocks

quarter coin shown for size reference

Our Genuine RadMax Lead blocks are prefect for shielding from higher radiation levels.
These are solid 1" thick Lead blocks that measure approx. 3.25" square (about 80mm).
They are brand new, not surplus or scrap. Each brick weighs a little over 4 pounds.
Although they are fabricated specifically for nuclear radiation shielding, they have many other uses including tabletop bases for hammering/fabricating jewelry.

Known as 'Pigs', these are Lead storage containers for radioactive material from the nuclear industry. These are not cheap boxes with a little lead sheet glued inside. They are solid cast Lead - fabricated expressly for nuclear material containment.
Safely store your Uranium metal, Isotopes, and Radioactive ore samples.
We've obtained large quantities of Pigs from the nuclear industry, picked out the ones that are in the best condition, then professionally strip them, add two coats of OSHA yellow paint, and affix new vinyl OSHA radiation warning labels.
Our Pig also includes an additional D.O.T. radiation vinyl (not paper) sticker that you can apply to the back. Using a Sharpie® or Dry Erase marker, you can record the contents and wipe it off & change it as you store different radioactive materials.
Pig measures about 82mm inside diameter x 115mm usable inside height.
The wall thickness is 3/16" (5mm) throughout, including the lid.
No need to worry about contamination - these were used as 'external containers'.
No radioactive materials have ever come in contact with these containers.

Heavy, solid 3/16" (5mm) thick Lead construction throughout.

Re-writable D.O.T. radiation vinyl sticker
included to indicate Pig contents.

Lead Bricks

When our Lead Blocks simply won't do and you really need some serious radiation shielding,
full-size
RadMax Lead Bricks are the answer.
These are solid 2" x 4" x 8" high quality
RadMax Lead bricks, brand new, not surplus or scrap and are fabricated specifically for nuclear radiation shielding. Each brick is quite heavy - approximately 26 pounds.
Lead bricks are generally called for when dealing with potentially dangerous radiation levels.
We try to ship these as economically as possible to reduce costs. We can generally get away with shipping out a single brick via flat-rate Priority Mail. However, when we have these manufactured we have to pay the full UPS shipping charges to get them here. These fees in turn have to be dissolved into the cost of each brick. They wind up being fairly expensive, but when you really need them, they are well worth the price.

RadMax Lead Sheet

Customers for our RadMax lead sheet include Los Alamos National Laboratory,
Sandia National Laboratory and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Specifically manufactured for use as radiation shielding, RadMax is a high performance, high purity & super dense Lead sheet.
A proprietary manufacturing process that involves manipulating the grain structure of the material makes it far superior to other types of metallic shielding.
RadMax is very malleable, forming and bending around tight corners easily. It is also easily cut with a scissors or soldered with a soldering iron. It is ideal for lining boxes for radioactive material storage, X-Ray tube shielding, etc.

We purchase RadMax in large quantities directly from the manufacturer. Our master rolls are 4 feet wide X 8 feet long that we cut it into 1' wide  rolls in the following
sizes: 1' x 1' , 1' x 2' , 1' x 3' , 1' x 4'
You may also purchase the full 4' x 8' sheet (due to the heavy weight, the additional overweight shipping charges have been added into the purchase price of full sheets).

Actual thickness

Our smaller rolls are shrink wrapped and pre-packaged in the following sizes:

RadMax 1' x 1' sheet: $8.00
RadMax 1' x 2' sheet: $16.00
RadMax 1' x 3' sheet: $24.00
RadMax 1' x 4' sheet: $32.00

RadMax 4' x 8' full sheet: $250.00

Unfortunately, we cannot offer quantity discounts on this item.
Due to its heavy weight, it is very expensive for us to stock and ship here.
Dimensions are priced at the current rate of $8.00 per Sq. Ft.

Radiation Decontamination Spray

RADIATION  DECONTAMINATION

DECON 101
Decontamination Spray

If you're going to be working with radioactive materials, you're going to need some of this.
'DECON 101' Radiation Decontamination spray is widely used in the nuclear industry.
Highly effective at decontaminating hands and other exposed parts of the body.
DECON 101 has a unique foaming action that adheres to radioactive particles and lifts them from the pores and skin surface and holds them in solution until rinsed away.
One or two applications are sufficient for most cases.
Highly recommended if working with radioactive materials or raw Uranium ore.
We've also found this product works well on countertops and virtually anywhere else you might have radiation contamination.

Potassium Iodide (KI)

Potassium Iodide, also known as KI, is an iodine compound. It is approved for over-the-counter sale and has been determined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be a safe and effective method to block exposure to radioactive iodine released during nuclear disasters.
T
he most feared consequence of a nuclear reactor accident, or nuclear bomb attack is the release of Radioactive Iodine into the environment. What makes Radioactive Iodine so dangerous is that the body cannot distinguish it from ordinary iodine. As a result, if swallowed or inhaled (it can remain in the atmosphere for days), it will be absorbed into the thyroid gland where it is known to cause cancer... even in small doses.

Potassium iodide has been shown to effectively reduce the risk of thyroid cancer following exposure to radioactive iodide fallout. Potassium iodide is a safe and effective means of blocking the absorption of harmful radioiodines by the thyroid.

The value of Potassium Iodide was demonstrated during the Chernobyl nuclear accident.
Authorities began a mass distribution of Potassium Iodide just hours after the explosion. In the years following the accident ( in areas where people received the drug ), the incidence of thyroid cancer has not increased. But where Potassium Iodide was not distributed, thyroid cancer has begun appearing at epidemic rates, with over 11,000 known cases.
This number continues to rise and is not expected to peak until 2010.

In the event of a radioactive release, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission recommends evacuation as your first line of defense followed by Potassium Iodide treatment when certain conditions warrant.
The FDA has issued guidelines for the proper use of Potassium Iodide which can be viewed at the following link: FDA Guidance
